Uber's $14.8 billion acquisition of Delivery Hero reshapes the global food delivery landscape.

Uber has announced its acquisition of Germany-based Delivery Hero for approximately $14.8 billion, aiming to enhance its international presence in food delivery. This deal encompasses Delivery Hero's extensive network across 50 markets, generating around $42 billion in gross bookings last year. This acquisition may compress competition in the delivery sector, impacting market dynamics and territory availability for other players. Additionally, the expanded network could enhance unit economics for franchisee delivery partnerships through increased order density.
Uber has announced its acquisition of Germany-based Delivery Hero in a transaction valued at approximately $14.8 billion. This deal represents Uber's most significant expansion in the global food delivery sector, allowing Uber Eats to enhance its international footprint by combining operations across 99 countries. Pro forma estimates indicate that the merged companies generated about $236 billion in gross bookings in 2025.
The acquisition will integrate several leading delivery brands, including foodpanda, Glovo, PedidosYa, talabat, HungerStation, and Baedal Minjok into Uber's operations. Delivery Hero’s businesses collectively reported around $42 billion in gross bookings last year across 50 markets. Uber CEO Dara Khosrowshahi emphasized the potential of the merger, stating, “Delivery Hero’s talented team has built an extraordinary business... By bringing our platforms together, we will extend affordable, reliable delivery to many millions more people.”
Niklas Östberg, CEO and cofounder of Delivery Hero, expressed enthusiasm for the partnership, highlighting the alignment with Uber's global strategy: “We are excited about this opportunity with Uber and the possibilities it offers for our employees, shareholders, and partners.” The merger aims to enhance customer choice, strengthen demand for merchants via advertising tools, and offer more earning opportunities for couriers through increased order density.
As part of the agreement, Uber has committed to preserving Delivery Hero’s Berlin headquarters and maintaining the local workforce through at least 2029. The company also plans to invest approximately $2.3 billion in Germany over the next five years to bolster its operations, workforce, and initiatives related to autonomous vehicles and partnerships with the automotive sector.
The transaction is still pending shareholder approval and regulatory reviews, with a projected closing in the second half of 2027. This acquisition aligns with a trend in the food delivery sector, following significant deals by competitors such as DoorDash, which acquired U.K.-based Deliveroo for $3.9 billion and Finland-based Wolt for $8.1 billion. The outcome of this merger may influence operational dynamics within the affected franchise systems, particularly concerning continuity, royalty structures, and support systems for franchisees.
