Tropical Smoothie Café plans a marketing push to boost brand awareness amidst solid growth metrics.

Tropical Smoothie Café has seen average-unit volumes rise to over $1 million despite recent declines. With 1,700 locations, the chain aims to enhance its low brand awareness of 25% through effective marketing strategies, believing it has significant growth potential. CEO Max Wetzel indicates that brand awareness improvement could significantly leverage their strong customer satisfaction rates.
The focus on marketing and brand awareness suggests that Tropic Smoothie's unit economics could improve, potentially affecting territory growth strategies for franchisees and multi-unit operators seeking profitable investments in the QSR sector.
Tropical Smoothie Café is ramping up its marketing efforts to enhance brand awareness, which CEO Max Wetzel identifies as a significant opportunity for the chain. Despite achieving an impressive annual sales growth rate of 21% from 2017 to 2024 and a nearly doubled average-unit volume, which rose from $640,000 in 2016 to over $1 million in 2024, the brand still has low recognition. In 2025, average-unit volumes dipped by 4%, and unit growth slowed to less than 10%, although system sales still grew by 6.5%, outpacing the 3% average for the Top 500 restaurant chains.
Wetzel, who took over following the brand's acquisition by private-equity firm Blackstone, highlights that Tropical Smoothie Café maintains a high customer satisfaction score, with over 93% of customers rating their experience as either excellent or good. Approximately 55% of those ratings are “excellent,” indicating strong potential for word-of-mouth marketing. However, despite having 1,700 locations, the brand suffers from a brand awareness level of only 25%, significantly below the 44.6% average for similarly sized chains, according to Technomic Ignite data.
Wetzel acknowledges that while the chain expanded quickly due to favorable economics, its marketing efforts lagged, leaving growth opportunities untapped. He believes that increasing brand awareness can harness the existing high satisfaction rates to drive more business. “It’s probably one of the biggest opportunities we have,” Wetzel stated. As the company looks to implement its marketing strategy, the success of these efforts may depend on elevating its visibility in a competitive market while converting existing customer satisfaction into new customer acquisition. The coming months will reveal how effectively the brand can leverage its strong customer loyalty to boost overall recognition and business performance.
