Sweetgreen aims to enhance customer experience by integrating technology and hospitality in its Infinite Kitchen concept.

Sweetgreen is focusing on enhancing customer experience to reverse its declining sales, with its new Infinite Kitchen concept that incorporates digital ordering kiosks. Despite a 12.8% drop in same-store sales and 11.2% decline in traffic, the brand is determined to provide both speed and human interaction in its service. The new technology is aimed at improving order accuracy and food quality while making the customer experience more enjoyable.
This shift towards a blended service model may affect unit economics by enhancing customer satisfaction and retention, which is essential for franchisees operating in a competitive QSR environment.
Sweetgreen is strategically focusing on enhancing human connections within its brand while simultaneously incorporating technology to foster a more efficient operational model. Co-founder and Chief Concept Officer Nicolas Jammet emphasized, “We build and invest in technology to support and elevate the food and support and elevate the people,” highlighting the brand's commitment to blending hospitality with innovation. The company's recent initiative, the Infinite Kitchen concept, launched in 2023, features automated kitchens and digital ordering kiosks designed to streamline service and improve customer experience.
Facing a decline in sales and customer traffic, with same-store sales dropping 12.8% and traffic falling 11.2% year-over-year in the first quarter of 2026, Sweetgreen is pivoting its strategy towards delivering a superior customer experience. Co-founder and CEO Jonathan Neman underscored the importance of focusing on customer experience as a fundamental part of their turnaround strategy.
The Infinite Kitchen model aims to offer customer flexibility, appealing to both digital-savvy customers and those preferring traditional interactions. A spokesperson for Sweetgreen noted that the technology enhances operational efficiency, stating, “The Infinite Kitchen technology delivers faster throughput, improved order accuracy, and elevated food quality, all while creating a better experience for both guests and team members.”
However, implementing kiosk technology has presented challenges, particularly for first-time customers. Jammet acknowledged that while many regular customers appreciate the kiosks, first-time visitors may struggle with the digital experience if signage and customer flow aren't intuitive. He stated, "There's this kind of constructive pressure to make sure the retail design and the flow and the wayfinding are very clear," indicating a need for ongoing improvements to the customer experience as kiosks are integrated into the restaurant's operation.
As Sweetgreen continues to refine its Infinite Kitchen concept and address the learning curve associated with kiosks, the effectiveness of this dual approach to enhance customer service and operational efficiency will determine its success in reversing the current decline in sales and traffic. How well Sweetgreen can navigate these challenges while maintaining hospitality in a digital age may shape its future trajectory in a highly competitive market.
