Starbucks is launching a pilot program allowing select employees to create content on TikTok, sharing in associated ad revenue. Why It Matters

This pilot may reshape marketing strategies within the franchise sector, as it demonstrates a shift in how employees can contribute to brand storytelling. This shift could influence unit economics as franchises consider new avenues for customer connection and engagement.

Starbucks is set to launch a pilot program later this summer, allowing selected employees to create content on TikTok while sharing in ad revenue. This initiative is part of Starbucks' Green Apron Creators program, which aims to tap into the creativity of its employees to enhance brand storytelling on social media. Starbucks is the first brand to pilot custom Creator Networks in TikTok's Content Suite, focusing on empowering its workforce as content creators.

The program will compensate employees, referred to as "Green Apron Creators," for their contributions, thus integrating content creation with a revenue-sharing model. As noted by Erin Silvoy, Senior Vice President of Global Marketing at Starbucks, “Every day, our partners bring Starbucks to life... and more than ever, they are sharing those moments with the world online in authentic, creative and unique ways.” This strategy capitalizes on the significant engagement of Starbucks employees on social media, with Starbucks reporting that their staff posts three times more frequently than those at similar-sized retailers.

With a strong follower base of 3.2 million on TikTok, the initiative aims not just to produce authentic content but also to refine a model that could be expanded for wider revenue-sharing opportunities in the future. “On TikTok, some of the most compelling brand stories come from the people who know a brand best,” said Andy Yang, Global Head of Creative and Brand Products. This shift from viewing employees as potential liabilities for social media content to integrating them into the marketing strategy illustrates a broader trend within the sector.

In light of ongoing challenges faced by chain restaurants, with the Technomic Top 500 showing slowing sales growth, this pilot may help Starbucks differentiate itself in the competitive market. Whether this innovative approach effectively translates into enhanced brand engagement and profitability for Starbucks will depend on the outcomes of the pilot and how quickly the model can be optimized for broader application.
