SPB Hospitality redefines its strategy under new CEO G.J. Hart, targeting focused growth.

SPB Hospitality has launched the SPB Playbook, a strategy to align its upscale casual brands, including J. Alexander's and Krystal, under one leadership while focusing on operational excellence. The initiative follows a portfolio streamlining effort and will see J. Alexander's opening five new units this year, including locations in Texas and Georgia.
This strategy change suggests that SPB Hospitality is prioritizing effective unit economics and streamlined operations, which may appeal to franchisees looking for stability and potential growth in familiar territories.
G.J. Hart, formerly the CEO of Red Robin, has initiated a strategic shift at SPB Hospitality just six months into his tenure as the company’s chief executive. The firm recently announced the launch of its SPB Playbook, which redefines how its upscale casual brands, including J. Alexander’s and Krystal, will operate under a unified leadership team while allowing each brand to pursue its own strategic goals. This move follows SPB's recent divestitures, including the sale of Logan's Roadhouse in March and Old Chicago Pizza last year, aimed at sharpening the focus on its flagship brands with solid operational foundations and long-term potential.
The SPB Playbook introduces a new operating framework highlighting the company’s mission of “Great People. Remarkable Food. Exceptional Restaurants.” This plan places particular emphasis on the existing restaurant brands with successful operational histories, including chef-driven concepts like Amada and Village Whiskey. Amanda Hyde, who was appointed COO in March, will lead Krystal with a strategy designed to align with its unique customer expectations and competitive landscape.
Notably, the company is adapting its management model from traditional general managers to a "head coach" format that emphasizes accountability and team development. This structure will evolve into an ownership partner model, which the company believes will enhance performance alignment with long-term success.
SPB also sees potential for growth through J. Alexander’s, which is positioned as a key expansion vehicle. The brand plans to open five new units this year, including locations in Texas and Georgia, alongside additional openings slated for the next few years. “We’re going where we know we’ll win,” Hart stated, reinforcing a strategic focus on thoughtful growth in familiar markets.
The development of the SPB Playbook stems from Hart's listening tour, during which he engaged operators to gather insights on operational needs. This feedback has prompted changes aimed at streamlining processes and supporting team members, including new communication tools.
As SPB Hospitality moves forward, the effectiveness of the SPB Playbook in enhancing operational efficiencies and brand performance will be crucial to observe.
