Subway partners with Walmart for Express Delivery, enhancing digital ordering options.

Subway has integrated its ordering system into the Walmart app and website, enabling customers to have sandwiches delivered in 30 minutes from select stores. This initiative, available at approximately 1,400 Subway locations within Walmart, aims to streamline consumer convenience by combining grocery and food delivery options. Future collaboration is anticipated to enhance their partnership further.
This integration may reduce the complexity of delivery options for consumers, potentially impacting franchisee unit economics through increased sales. Additionally, it may compress available territories for competitors in the QSR space as consumer preferences shift towards integrated delivery solutions.
Subway has expanded its digital footprint by becoming the first restaurant to integrate with Walmart's Express Delivery service, allowing customers to order sandwiches through the Walmart app and website for delivery in 30 minutes or less. This collaboration, which involves approximately 1,400 Subway locations situated within Walmart stores, aims to streamline the customer experience by combining grocery and meal orders in one platform. Currently, the service is available in select states including Connecticut, Florida, Georgia, Ohio, Pennsylvania, and Texas.
As part of this initiative, customers can browse Subway's menu, customize their sandwiches, and select options unique to Walmart, such as the Smoky BBQ Grilled Chicken sub and SuperPretzel soft pretzel. Notably, pricing remains aligned with traditional in-store menus.
Damien Harmon, president of Subway North America, emphasized the significance of this partnership, stating, "Subway has always been focused on making freshly made, quality meals accessible to customers wherever they are. The integration of Subway delivery into the Walmart app and Walmart.com is a natural evolution of our 20-year relationship built on shared commitment to value, freshness and everyday convenience."
This move signifies a notable expansion strategy for Subway amidst a challenging restaurant environment, as chain restaurant sales have slowed. With over 35,000 franchised restaurants globally, Subway's ongoing relationship with Walmart reflects a strategy for growth through innovative service offerings.
The partnership also hints at future developments, including more restaurant locations within Walmart, unit remodels, and additional collaborative initiatives aimed at enhancing convenience for customers. The pace and success of this integration may indicate the health of Subway’s system and its adaptability in a competitive market, as they work to meet evolving consumer preferences. Whether this partnership will sustain momentum through the upcoming quarters may depend on the execution of further joint initiatives.
