Red Robin appoints Whataburger's Scott Hudler as new CMO amid turnaround efforts.

Red Robin Gourmet Burgers & Brews has appointed Scott Hudler, formerly CMO at Whataburger, as its new CMO. Hudler will oversee marketing for the 500-unit casual-dining brand during its turnaround strategy aimed at increasing customer traffic.
This leadership change may influence Red Robin's marketing strategies and customer engagement efforts, likely affecting franchisee operations and unit economics.
Red Robin Gourmet Burgers & Brews has appointed Scott Hudler as its new Chief Marketing Officer (CMO), bringing extensive experience from his previous role as CMO of Whataburger, where he served for over two and a half years. Hudler's background also includes leadership positions at Cotton Patch Cafe, Torchy’s Tacos, and a decade-long tenure at Dunkin’, along with a brief stint at Dick’s Sporting Goods. He succeeds Russ Klein, who held the interim CMO position since April 2025 and will continue to assist in a consulting role until the year's end.
In his new capacity, Hudler will focus on several key areas, including brand strategy, advertising, digital marketing, loyalty programs, culinary innovation, customer insights, and marketing communications for the 500-unit Red Robin brand. With the company currently undergoing a turnaround initiative aimed at boosting customer traffic and enhancing financial performance, Hudler’s appointment aligns with these strategic priorities. Recently, Red Robin reported its best traffic results in three years, influenced by the introduction of value meals and a targeted marketing strategy that appeals to specific customer demographics.
CEO Dave Pace emphasized Hudler's proven record in building iconic brands while highlighting his “guest-first mindset.” In a statement, Hudler expressed enthusiasm about joining Red Robin, pointing out the brand's potential to strengthen connections with guests and enhance visit incentives: “Red Robin continues to have a tremendous opportunity to deepen its connection with guests and create even more reasons to visit as it builds on the momentum it has created.”
Looking ahead, Hudler's marketing leadership may significantly influence Red Robin's ability to maintain customer engagement and capitalize on its recent momentum in a challenging dining landscape.
