This report may impact how current and potential franchisees perceive their operational environment, highlighting challenges that could affect unit economics and franchisee satisfaction.
The American Franchise Academy (AFA) has published the "2026 State of the Franchise Operator Report," revealing critical insights into the challenges faced by franchise operators across the United States. The report, which surveyed 879 franchise professionals, including multi-unit franchisees, district managers, unit managers, and frontline team members, highlights significant gaps in operational efficacy and workforce development.
Key findings reveal that financial visibility is the most pressing challenge for franchisees, as noted by nearly half of the respondents. The report also identifies a concerning lack of experience and training among district and unit managers, with 57% of district managers reporting less than two years in their positions, and 36% of unit managers being less than one year into their roles. This pervasive inexperience suggests potential risks for franchise performance, as these individuals are tasked with leading and achieving results without sufficient foundational knowledge. Furthermore, only 59% of frontline employees understand how or when they may receive a raise, indicating a significant gap in employee engagement and morale.
Aicha Bascaro, Founder and CEO of AFA, emphasized the importance of this report, stating, “The franchisor teaches operators how to run the brand. We teach franchisees and their leaders how to run the business. This report aims to show these professionals they are not alone, to empower them, and to provide the industry with the data needed to start closing the gap.” This report is particularly timely as it coincides with AFA's 10th anniversary and aims to be an annual reference for tracking changes in the franchise operator landscape.
For franchise investors and operators, the report underscores the necessity for enhanced training programs and tools that address the challenges identified. The lack of experience among management positions and financial visibility issues may affect the operational health of franchises, warranting immediate attention from stakeholders.
Going forward, the implications of these findings may stir conversations within the sector about the need for more robust training and support systems for franchise operators as they navigate an increasingly complex business environment.
