McDonald's has appointed Skye Anderson as the new president of McDonald's USA, replacing Joe Erlinger, as the brand struggles with weak traffic and low same-store sales growth. Meanwhile, Dave & Buster's has made a leadership change with CFO Darin Harper taking over as CEO from retiring Tarun Lal, as the chain aims to address ongoing sales declines in a competitive environment.

Why It Matters

These leadership changes at two major QSR brands may affect franchisee operations and confidence, particularly as McDonald's seeks to improve its unit economics and customer engagement amid declining traffic.

Skye Anderson has been appointed president of McDonald's USA, succeeding Joe Erlinger who has departed from the role. Anderson, a 26-year veteran of the fast-food giant, takes the helm at a time when McDonald's is grappling with weak traffic in its U.S. market. This comes after a modest 0.8% increase in same-store sales during the second quarter of 2023, a performance that executives have attributed to operational missteps and ineffective promotional campaigns. CEO Chris Kempczinski criticized the company’s decision to replace a previously successful menu item with the less popular $3 and under menu, labeling it as “a bad trade.” Anderson's leadership indicates a potential shift in focus toward improving operational execution and revitalizing customer engagement as the brand aims to address declining foot traffic.

In parallel, Dave & Buster’s is undergoing a leadership transition with the retirement of CEO Tarun Lal, who cited family commitments in India as the reason for his exit. Darin Harper, previously the company's CFO, has been promoted to CEO. Lal's tenure, which began in 2022 after a stint at KFC, aimed to implement a back-to-basics strategy for the arcade and dining chain. Despite some early successes, overall same-store sales have struggled to rebound during his leadership. Harper, who has nearly 30 years of financial expertise, is now tasked with aligning the chain's business strategy with improving sales trends.

In another critical industry update, Chipotle Mexican Grill is facing a food safety investigation linked to a salmonella outbreak in Minnesota. The Minnesota Department of Health is probing the outbreak associated with quick-service Mexican restaurants, with jalapeños being identified as a probable source. Chipotle has proactively removed these jalapeños from its restaurants in the affected area while sourcing replacements from different growers, signaling the company’s commitment to uphold food safety standards during this health crisis.

As these developments unfold, attention will be drawn to how quickly both McDonald's and Dave & Buster's can adapt to their new leadership and whether their respective strategies will effectively address ongoing sales challenges.
