Why It Matters

The emphasis on dual-branded restaurant growth may create additional competitive pressure for franchisees in available territories, particularly in casual dining, affecting unit economics.

Dine Brands has reported a mixed financial performance for the second quarter ending June 28, as IHOP sees success, while Applebee's faces ongoing challenges. Notably, IHOP experienced a 1.5% increase in same-store sales, aided by a surge in off-premises catering, which rose by 22%. Dine Brands CEO John Peyton highlighted the positive momentum, stating, “An early Q3 trend suggests that momentum is continuing. The strategy is working, and the operational foundation behind it is stronger than it was a year ago.” This performance marks a continuation of IHOP's strong showing, marking its third consecutive quarter of outperforming industry averages.

Conversely, Applebee's reported a 1.8% decline in same-store sales, although it has shown slight improvement over the past five quarters. The brand's struggles in April were particularly notable, contrasted with a strong performance from the previous year. Dine Brands is attempting to bolster Applebee's performance through its barbell pricing strategy, which includes promotions like the return of the $15.99 All You Can Eat deal and the introduction of new menu items like Loaded Potato Waves.

Throughout its operations, Dine Brands is also advancing its dual-branded restaurant concept, aiming to open 80 “IHOPBees” locations by the end of 2026. As part of its steady growth, the company opened nine net new restaurants, bringing its total to 3,289 globally. Revenues for the second quarter rose to $240.9 million from $230.8 million year-on-year, although net income decreased to $4.3 million or $0.35 per share, compared to $13.8 million or $0.89 per share in the same quarter the previous year.

Moving forward, it remains to be seen whether Applebee’s can build upon its recent improvements and if IHOP's growth strategy can maintain its momentum as economic conditions continue to shift.
