Denny's appoints new COO amid efforts to improve execution and service.

Denny's has hired Aaron Howard as its new chief operating officer following the promotion of Christopher Bode to CEO. Howard has extensive experience in the restaurant industry, including roles at Cracker Barrel and Wendy's, and will be instrumental in implementing Denny’s turnaround plan, Project Grand Slam, particularly as the chain navigates sales declines.
This management transition may lead to changes in operational efficiency and unit economics, potentially impacting franchisee performance and overall profitability.
Denny's has appointed Aaron Howard as its new Chief Operating Officer, succeeding Christopher Bode, who was promoted to CEO in April. Howard brings a wealth of experience from various roles in the restaurant industry, most notably spending over 13 years at Cracker Barrel, where he advanced to the position of regional Vice President before leaving in 2023. His extensive background also includes nearly 16 years at Wendy's and more recent stints with CKE Restaurants and as COO of Restaurant Growth Services.
Howard joins Denny's, headquartered in Spartanburg, South Carolina, at a crucial time of transition for the diner chain. Following its acquisition in January by a group that includes TriArtisan Capital Advisors and Yadav Enterprises, Denny's is now poised to implement a new turnaround strategy known as Project Grand Slam. His operational expertise is expected to be vital in advancing the goals set by the new leadership team as they seek to revitalize the brand and enhance profitability.
“Aaron is an operator,” said CEO Bode, reflecting on their shared past at CKE Restaurants and emphasizing Howard's critical role in improving operational effectiveness. The strategic focus appears to be on strengthening the brand’s value proposition, increasing relevant customer traffic, and enhancing restaurant-level profitability as Denny's aims to improve its overall performance in a challenging dining environment.
In his own words, Howard expressed enthusiasm for the opportunity, stating, “Strong restaurants are built through consistency, discipline, and care. That is the work I am here to help drive.” Given that Denny's operates over 1,450 restaurants globally, with a significant portion franchised, the success of Howard's leadership may hinge on his ability to streamline operations and enhance service across these locations.
As Denny's embarks on its turnaround plan, the effectiveness of Howard’s operational strategies in restoring performance may become critical, suggesting a need to monitor how well the brand executes its initiatives in the forthcoming quarters.
